Roland Cleans the Halls

One hand holds a thin, pink cloth
like a girl’s nightgown.
One foot pins the cloth to the floor,
And the dance begins: a hop
a shuffle forward, and a half-step back.
A quick spinning pivot,
And Roland has erased
From the creamy linoleum floor,
the chalky, crumbling marks
of the students’ black soles.
